SamueL & Don Miguel – LDNYC (Review)

Don Miguel, Reviews, SamueL

London MC SamueL links up with stateside beatsmith Don Miguel for ‘LDNYC’, a nineteen track, summery boom bap project that showcases crisp, New York infused musicality with charismatic British vocals. The album also features a number of guest appearances, including Genesis Elijah and Blaq Poet.

‘StayHi’ is a great way to announce the duo’s arrival, with a confident vibe transfused into the soulful production. SamueL’s style is somewhat simplistic, but it makes a change to listen to an MC concentrating so highly on vibes alone, instead of bashing you over the head with complexity and indulgent lyricism. With the raw, jazzy sample chops displayed on ‘Relate’, Don Miguel’s shimmery production style is a unique slant on nineties influenced rap music. NY spitter Alpha Memphis and UK legend Genesis Elijah also contribute humble and intelligent verses to the early highlight.

‘I’m Glad’ is a stripped back, hard hitting boom bap track, and this is where SamueL’s unique voice and writing style excels; Don Miguel leaves him space to drop his down-to-earth, relatable lyrics with force and precision. The bass-synth riff and percussion of the title track also sticks to this subtle production approach, and SamueL matches this with an intricate, melodic flow and energised delivery. The quirky synthesizers also make this cut memorable and unique.

Queensbridge veteran Blaq Poet features on the bouncy ‘Killin’ It’. The beat on here is one of Don Miguel’s most charismatic, catchy productions, and both SamueL and Poet drop with seamless skill; delivery, flow and rhyme schemes are exhibited on a high level here by both MC’s. The hyped ‘FVCK IT’, which features Monsignor Ghost and Bonez is another standout cut. The organic vibe is complimented by passionate, raw verses from an eclectic mix of styles, which is something that impresses throughout the whole run-time of the LP.

‘LDNYC’ is packed with authentic hip-hop tracks; if you like the art of beats and rhymes, both are showcased expertly on this project. With a distinctive approach, SamueL’s humble attitude and classy, professional lyricism shines and Don Miguel’s versatile production touch enhances the UK MCs vocals. It’s a free download one too, so there’s no excuse for not checking this one.
